Chalk River, Ontario – Cheryl Gallant MP, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, is pleased to express her sincere appreciation to all employees of Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL), present and past, Municipalities, local businesses, related nuclear industry stakeholders from across Canada together with international organizations, and individuals for participating in her request for opinions on how the Government of Canada should proceed in the next phase of restructuring of AECL. While the deadline to provide a formal Expression of Interest to the government was April 2nd, interested constituents may still go to a special web page at www.cherylgallant.com/chalk-river-labs to share ideas for the future of AECL. All submissions are confidential.
“The response has been nothing short of amazing,” remarked Cheryl Gallant, MP. “I received over one thousand responses, in various forms, for the Federal Natural Resources Minister, Joe Oliver.”
“My decision to engage the entire community, as well as requesting input from existing employees of a Crown Corporation, has never been done before. I took this step with the firm belief the people who work at AECL are its greatest resource,” said MP Cheryl Gallant. “The President of AECL is to be commended for ensuring employees were able to receive my letter.”
Each summer MP Gallant meets with local businesses in the Aerospace, Defence, Nuclear and Forestry sectors, as part of her regular summer outreach program.
“For a number of years I have been working on developing a technology cluster, in the defence-related and aerospace industries as well as the as the nuclear sector. Renfrew County needs to participate in the shift to the knowledge economy, which is where the jobs of the future are going to be created.”
“You first start by having local companies gain a better understanding of what Chalk River Laboratories do. With all the change happening with this major Federal Government employer, the opportunity a business could be seeking may be right in its own back yard,” remarked Cheryl Gallant, MP. “What this also does is attract businesses from outside our region that see the opportunities, and are attracted to the activity taking place.”
“New employers looking at our area as a potential location to set up a business should know the support is here. The response I received about the future of AECL is the proof that support is here,” concluded Cheryl Gallant, MP.
