PETAWAWA, ONTARIO– Cheryl Gallant MP, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, was joined by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa to announce a total investment of $49 million toward several infrastructure projects at the base. Of particular interest to the upper Ottawa valley was the announcement of over $4 million for a total of 19 contracts for various improvements to base infrastructure.
“The contracts announced today by our Conservative Government represent millions of dollars invested in our local economy,” stated Cheryl Gallant, MP. “Jobs and the economy remain my top priority and that of our government. “I am proud to be a part of a government that invests in the Canadian Forces,” said Mrs. Gallant. “In addition to supporting our Forces, the projects announced today will generate important benefits for the local economy here in Petawawa, Pembroke and beyond for communities across Eastern Ontario andWestern Quebec.”
“Our Government has an ongoing commitment toward our men and women in uniform to provide them the tools and facilities they need to work and train for their service to Canada,” said Minister MacKay. “Our forces do excellent and often dangerous work on our behalf, and they deserve nothing less than top-of-the-line infrastructure in order to do those jobs safely and effectively.”
While on base, Minister MacKay took the opportunity to officially cut the ribbon for the new building housing the Joint Personnel Support Unit Eastern Ontario Regional Element, a project valued at $2.6 million. The facility will provide key coordination for important services delivered throughout the region in support of ill and injured CF personnel and their families. In addition, Minister MacKay also announced the opening of the Equipment Fielding Coordination Centre (EFCC), a project valued at $3.5 million, as well as commitments totaling $38.8 million towards two training accommodations facilities, one of which will support the base’s Medium-to-Heavy-Lift Helicopter program.
In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government of Canada conducted an open, fair, and transparent competitive process to award each of these contracts.
