Chalk River, 2012 July 10 — Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is pleased to announce that it will open its doors to the public for the first time in over a decade this summer, when it hosts an Open House for the general public. Held at the Chalk River Laboratories on Saturday, August 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the family-friendly event will give the public an opportunity to learn more about Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, and some of the unique Canadian science facilities that call the Ottawa Valley home.
Last held in the summer of 2000, AECL’s Open House is intended to provide the local community with a glimpse into some of the different programs and services that AECL undertakes on behalf of Canadians. However, a number of activities are also being planned at the event for visitors of all ages. In addition to displays and demonstrations, a non-technical seminar series and guided and unguided walking tours, the Open House will feature numerous activities for children, including a “Kids in Science” demonstration held by Science North.
“AECL is really excited to open its doors and welcome the public to the Chalk River Laboratories to learn more about the important scientific, technical and operational activities that go on here in the Ottawa Valley,” said Bob Walker, AECL’s President & CEO. “We’re extremely proud of the role AECL plays in developing peaceful and innovative applications from nuclear science and technology, and this event is a great opportunity to give our local communities a better understanding of our nuclear programs.”
Among the many activities taking place at the Open House will be demonstrations of some of AECL’s tools and technologies, including robotic tooling and simulation equipment. A number of AECL’s heavy equipment vehicles, including its fire trucks and security vehicles, will also be available for visitors to check out. And, in addition to many educational opportunities for the whole family, a BBQ dinner will also be available for purchase.
“We really hope the community takes advantage of this opportunity,” added Walker. “We’ve had a lot of requests over the years from community members, friends, family members and colleagues to hold an event like this, and we hope to have a strong turnout on August 11.”
For anyone who is interested in attending the AECL Open House, pre-registration is required. The process is very straightforward, with participants being asked to go to www.aecl.ca/OpenHouse to fill out the registration form prior to August 10. Visitors are also encouraged to attend the Open House with a current AECL staff member but AECL is please to offer tours for any interested member of the public.
A complete list of activities will be available in the coming weeks. Interested visitors are encouraged to visit www.aecl.ca/OpenHouse for the latest news and information on the event.
