Pembroke, Ontario – Cheryl Gallant, M.P. for Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke, was pleased to award the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County with a $22,822 grant through the Federal Government’s New Horizons for Seniors program. This funding will go towards the Assault Centre’s production of “Stories From Around the Patchwork Quilt”, a series of skits explaining the numerous forms of elder abuse and encouraging people who see themselves in similar situations to ask for help.
“I would like to thank Joanne Brooks, Kelly-Ann Taylor, Jean Maves and all those involved on this project at the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre,” said Mrs. Gallant. “Seniors who suffer from elder abuse often do so in silence, as they are often unaware of what is happening to them. Thanks to this series of skits, we will be able to help educate seniors and prevent further cases of elder abuse.”
‘Stories From Around the Patchwork Quilt” will seek to expand awareness of elder abuse through Renfrew County in facilities such as churches and long-term care facilities. They will feature seniors and boomers performing skits to highlight the many forms of elder abuse, educate the public about this crime, and support the survivors of elder abuse.
The New Horizons for Seniors Program helps seniors put their experience to use through volunteerism and mentorship. Since its creation in 2004, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has helped seniors lead and participate in activities such as raising awareness of elder abuse and volunteering on various projects.
The Government of Canada is proud to support seniors in strengthening our communities and building our country. To find out more about the New Horizons for Seniors Program and how to apply for funding please visit my Programs page.
