On Tuesday, Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced that the Government of Canada has re-adopted the traditional names of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the Canadian Army.

Our Government has a steadfast commitment to commemorate Canada’s history – especially of those who sacrificed in service to our country.

In 1968, Parliament passed legislation that unified the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force into a single service – the Canadian Forces.

Our Government believes that Canada’s military traditions are worth celebrating and preserving. Some of those traditions were lost with the elimination of the military’s historic titles.

Through the reinstatement of these titles for the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army, our Government is reinstating an important part of our national identity. This decision celebrates our country’s past and solidifies our connection to those who sacrificed so much for all Canadians.
