MP Cheryl Gallant Announces Funding to Protect Women and Girls

Pembroke, Ontario – Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke, was pleased today to announce a call for funding for community projects that take action to prevent cyber and sexual violence against women and girls.

“Violence against women and girls has devastating and far-reaching effects on the community,” said MP Gallant. “The projects supported by this call for proposals will reduce violence against women in our communities, and reach out to those who have been affected by such violence.”

Recent high-profile cases have made cyberviolence and sexual violence against women and girls top-of-mind concerns for Canadians.  The Government of Canada is taking action by supporting projects at the local level to help prevent these forms of violence against women and girls, through a new call for proposals entitled Cyber and Sexual Violence: Helping Communities Respond.

The call for proposals will focus on two main areas: preventing and eliminating cyberviolence (e.g. cyberbullying, internet luring, cyberstalking) against young women and girls; and preventing or responding to sexual violence against women and girls through access to community services.

Funding of up to $175,000 will be provided for projects at the local level, and up to $300,000 will be available for projects with a national scope.  The deadline for organizations to apply for funding is December 1st, 2013.

Since 2007, the Harper Government has funded more than $62 million for projects to end violence against women and girls through the Women’s Program at Status of Women Canada. Government of Canada support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, supporting more than 600 projects across the country.
