  • Dear Governor General,

We understand that sometimes people in public life can make mistakes.

However, expressing personal beliefs to a supportive crowd, but doing so in a way that is hurtful to a wider audience is not acceptable as someone who represents our Head of State.

Whether in context or not, and unintended as it may have been, it is important to recognize the people you have injured through your comments.

    An apology is in order.

We have read your comments, and now believe that an office intended to be a symbol of our sovereignty is openly scornful of us.

    We deserve an apology.

We hope as Governor General you will use your position to make a positive case about the merits of scientific inquiry. It can have the power to improve the lives of Canadians. The case for the humility required to wield such power, must also be made.

As Governor General, you are the ultimate defender of our Constitution, which includes at the very beginning of the Charter a reminder of the source of our natural rights.

“Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law”

Finally, if the Prime Minister’s Office has instructed you not to apologize, we ask that you ignore the advice of the Prime Minister this one time. He and his team are all too happy to use you and your office to continue their pattern of sowing divisions among Canadians for political gain.

    Sincerely,
    Cheryl Gallant, M.P.
    Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke
