Stop the Values Test

There is currently a motion before the House of Commons that would ensure the Charter rights of Canadians are not infringed upon by these recent changes to the Canada Summer jobs program. It states:

That, in the opinion of the House, organizations that engage in non-political non-activist work, such as feeding the homeless, helping refugees, and giving kids an opportunity to go to camp, should be able to access Canada Summer Jobs funding regardless of their private convictions and regardless of whether or not they choose to sign the application attestation.

Contact your MP and tell them you want them to support this motion!

  • I have recently heard about the changes made to Canada Summer Jobs program which require organizations to sign an attestation of beliefs to be eligible for a government grant.

Section Two of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects freedom of thought, belief and expression in Canada. These are protections that all Canadians must take very seriously. Unfortunately, the attestation now attached to the Canada Summer Jobs program puts those rights at risk.

There is currently a motion before the House of Commons that would ensure the Charter rights of Canadians are not infringed upon by these recent changes to the Canada Summer jobs program. It states that organizations that engage in non-political, non-activist work should be able to access Canada Summer Jobs funding regardless of their personal beliefs and regardless of whether they choose to sign the attestation.

This is a reasonable solution and I urge you to vote for it. It will allow the many organizations in our area which help the community and offer students valuable job experience. Forcing an organization to sign a document stating they think a certain way or risk much-needed funding will hurt the most vulnerable in our communities, the people these organizations seek to help every day.

As my elected representative, I ask you to help protect our fundamental freedoms and vote in favour of this motion, in the hopes the Government will change its policy. This is an extremely serious issue and as your constituent, I would ask that you stand up for me and for the freedoms that shape our nation. I will be watching to see how you vote.
