In the post Cold-War international world, one of the top security concerns has been to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and nuclear materials to rogue states or terrorist groups. Working alongside other Canadian defence partners, the hard-working staff at AECL has been helping develop advanced systems to ensure the safety and security of our borders. These efforts resulted in the recently patented muon tomography cargo inspection system, which can be used for the detection of illicit trafficking of nuclear material. AECL and Chalk River will continue to work to stop the spread of illicit nuclear materials.
